If you don't want them or are willing to go with aftermarket items (Genuine Honda accessories OR something else), I say get the EX. If you want NAV or DVD factory installed, you have to go with the EX-L. He strongly warned me against the VCM engine until it gets a couple of years of use on the road.) The aforementioned items are the only differences between an EX and an EX-L. (My brother is a service manager at a Chevrolet dealership and does quite a bit of research regarding all makes and models of cars. (That was in September before the vans were even on the Honda website.) I did not want leather seats, a moonroof or the VCM engine. I ordered an EX-L, only to change my mind and go with an EX. I have to agree with some of the EX devotees. I worry that your fear of VCM may not be rooted in facts. I don't been to bust your chops at all, but I think it is important to those laboring over making the right buy decision, that they have facts. Kind of like if ABS fails, your brakes don't fail, ABS just turns off. This is also noted in the service manual. Where did you hear "if VCM fails you buy a whole new engine." Everything that I have researched and read indicates that if VCM detects any faults, it simply exits operation. My understanding is that much of the change is in the software logic and other anciallry devices to quell the natural harmonics created by running three cylinders. In Honda's application, I did not recall it involved a "redesign of the core of the engine." I believe it has beefed up cylinder head valve springs, and some other items such as intelligent motor mounts, etc., but I don't believe the block has changed significantly. In fact, it has been in use in various forms since WWII. AS has been noted, VCM has been introduced to the market decades ago. Your term of "cosmetic changes" can be applied to the last generation changes year to year perhpas, but it really can't be applied to the change from 04 to 05.įurther, VCM is not new. (Not to mention Honda calling it all-new) If the reviews and critics are calling it all new, it is pretty much all new. Most consider the 05 Odyssey to be "all-new," to use the car industry jargon being applied to it. If you like those things then maybe you should go for it.īob, with all due respect, I think some of your info may not be entirely true. I don't care much for leather or sunroofs so I don't think it was worth it. I ended up getting the EXL for a couple hundred above invoice and my significant other loves it but I can't help but think that I could have spent that $2k on something else. I found a dealer who quoted me a great price on both an EX and an EXL unfortunately he didn't have an EX in stock and I was afraid to order one having heard some of the horror stories about people ordering their vans and ending up waiting months or the price changes once the van actually gets there. It looks like the VCM won't make any difference either since most people are getting the same gas mileage with the EX.Īt the time I bought very few dealers in my area had an EX and those that did wanted sticker plus or minus a few hundred bucks for it. I paid $2000+ dollars more for the EXL and all I really liked about it that the EX didn't have was VCM. In addition our neighbor has had problems w/ their aftermaket DVD player in their Quest.Īs someone who wanted an EX but ended up getting an EXL I can say for me that the EXL isn't worth the extra $$. One aftermarket one we saw blocked the view from rear view mirror and was ill-fitting. We've kind of got used to it with our other cars, and we find leather cleans up nice w/ kids. I use it some when I'm alone, but w/ kids or others in the back seat we never had it open much in previous vehicles. Best use I guess is to let in some extra light on dreary winter days. In the summer the shade is closed b/c of heat. Having had sunroofs in my last several vehicles I feel those are kind of overated too. Heated mirrors are somewhat more useful IMO (in all EXs). I can't remember the last time though.and I live in Chicago! I have the same feeling about the power rear lift-gate (Touring), but I must be missing something there as people seem to really like that. Kind of made me feel like I'd had an "accident" in my pants. I think I used them a few times in the first few months. I've had heated seats in my Trooper for close to 5 years.
